Cumbria University has committed to reducing the carbon footprint of the Newton Rigg campus in Penrith and a number of low carbon and sustainability measures have successfully been installed.

A biomass fueled heating system has been installed in which provides heat and hot water for the onsite halls of residence. The biomass boiler burns woodchip, and Newton Rigg has a large number of willow trees on its campus which are being coppiced and used as a feedstock for the boiler.

The campus also showcases a wide range of sustainability measures including green roofs, water harvesting and high-tech composting. It is a great example of how these technologies can be applied in practice.

This interesting and informative site visit is an opportunity for local authorities to learn more about the innovative low carbon solutions the University as put in place, and includes a guided Campus tour.
